Habits-Standing the Test of Time
Today I was reminded of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. Many years ago I had the pleasure of working at Franklin Covey. The unique gift of this part-time gig was that we were trained on the 7 Habits and our work life was based on the book. Everything from the way we treated our customers, our peers and ran the retail store was based on the habits. It was a wonderful time filled with enlightenment and loads of fun. There is nothing wrong with going back to a foundation of principles that simply talk about how to live a good life.
Revisit the 7 Habits and see how they work for you:
- Be Proactive –Look at what you can influence instead of reacting to external forces
- Begin with the End in Mind –Start every task by knowing the outcome you desire
- Put First Things First –Identify and remember the key things in your life and put them first
- Think Win/Win–Be a team player. Don’t think win/lose. This is hard in 2009 when people don’t seem to be for each other, but just find a new group of people
- Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood–Listen. Walk a mile in their shoes before trying to be a “know it all”
- Synergize–Be a team player and pull all voices together for something better. When 2+2 equals more than 4
- Sharpen The Saw–Relax, Cool Out, Refresh
