If you’ve been dragging your feet when it comes to making your website more mobile-friendly, you now have Google to fear. The tech company just served everyone a concrete deadline:
Beginning April 21, it will incorporate a site’s mobile-friendliness into its ranking algorithm.
This means that web pages still giving mobile the cold shoulder will be ranked lower by Google. The company is pretty clear about that, noting in a blog post that the change will “have a significant impact in our search results.”

Test your site to see if it’s mobile friendly for the new Google search ranking requirements: Mobile-Friendly Test.
- Avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash
- Uses text that is readable without zooming
- Sizes content to the screen so users don’t have to scroll horizontally or zoom
- Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped
