The best way for businesses to absorb the changes on Facebook is to learn them a little at a time. If you have someone managing your social marketing then you can relax and ask them to give you the updates, if not, here is your slice of Facebook updates for October 2011.
How the latest Facebook Changes will affect your Brand Page:
People Are Talking: The latest statistic on your Brand Page is on the left-hand column under your Fan/Likes count. It is called “People Talking About” and it shows the number of people engaged on your account in the past 7 days.
Ticker: This is a great way for people to discover your Brand Page. Whenever anyone “Likes” a page it will go into their Ticker for people to see. They can hover over the message and go to your Brand Page.
Thursday and Friday: Two of the best and busiest days on Facebook and their “happiness” index spikes on Friday (per Facebook). Try to alter the days and times of your posts to capture different people. Also try adding an extra post on some days to share more content but don’t turn people off (can you say, “unlike”). Content will always be the key to your success!
Timeline: The new format for personal pages (and in the future Brand Pages) will allow people to see more activity on Facebook and your Brand Page. They can hover over a post and go to your Brand Page. The timeline is slowly being rolled out to all users.
The “Share” Link: Pure Brilliance
In my opinion, we will begin to see a decrease in the importance of “Likes” as “Share” will become the new “Like”. I encourage you to notice the “View Share” on your Brand Page (under the post) and click to see the details.
Happy Happy Joy Joy: I recently shared a post from a client’s Brand Pages to my Facebook personal profile. Two people, that I haven’t talked to years clicked “Like” on my “Share”. I was able to write on that “Share” and tell them to check out my client’s page. Now, here is the super cool thing. Ready?….those two people who clicked “like” and commented on that “share” put my client’s info into their “new stream” or ticker for everyone to see. Amazing!!!!
A few more:
“Update Fans Through Sending A Message”- Removed Sept 30, 2011 – FB wants us to update Fans on your FB Page and the quickest and best want to send updates.
SSL certificate (Secure Socket Layer) must be in place October 1, 2011: This is needed only if you have a written Facebook Developer App that is being used on a landing page. I’ve already taken care of this for those of you that have created custom FB tabs with me.
Review and Discussion Tabs Will Be Removed: October 31, 2011 – Facebook will remove Review and Discussion Tabs from Brand Pages. Facebook wants to see the discussions on the Brand Page walls for better engagement.
FBML Tabs Finally Going Away: June 2012 – Facebook may finally end FBML tabs and require all custom tabs go through iframes.
To your success!
