Remember the hope and promise of a really new and wonderful year? It’s hard to keep that momentum going when so much has already happened in January that pulls at your emotions, heart and senses. But events will always happen and how we handled them really speaks to how we will move forward to the next wonderful day. By now you should have seen the picture of this strong and handsome young man being pulled out of the Haitian earthquake rubble after being buried for a week. Through all of his fear he emerged with a million dollar smile and arms open wide. It was as if he was saying, “All right Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up”. (Sunset Boulevard, 1950 starring Gloria Swanson and William Holden) There are many good stories of triumph that are still emerging from the Haitian tragedy. I am touched by the people who used their cell phones, Twitter and Facebook to help save their lives, allow the world to see their reality and raise money.

Could you do a small favor for me? Pretend that every Friday is New Year’s Eve. Get excited and stay inspired. Remember that little boy in Haiti.

Starbucks is always doing something for the global community. Remember the award winning Akeelah and the Bee? This was a sweet movie from 2006 that was strongly promoted by Starbucks and was the first CD sold in stores.

Once again this holiday season Starbucks continues their partnership with RED. This time they are giving $1.00 from every “LOVE” CD sale to fight Aids. So far, the Starbucks-Red partnership and the Starbucks customers have contributed a staggering “7 million days worth of medicine” for people living with HIV in Africa. Starbucks has a wonderful communication and colaboration with their customers using their SM Website, Twitter and Facebook networks. By the way, their Facebook page has 5 million plus fans and Twitter has 550,000 followers.

Starbucks has used this base of caffeine and charity loving fans to join in song on December 7, 2009 at 8:30am est to sing, “All You Need Is Love”. Starbucks Love Project

I had the honor of having the Miss Jr. Pre-Teen and the Miss Pre-Teen Categories and the heavy task of interviewing about 100 wonderful girls between the ages of 7-12. This was not the typical type of contest that you think of with glam makeup and costumes. These where everyday girls from local neighborhoods who were in their first pageant. They didn’t have tons of hair spray and big production numbers but instead they were judged on interviews, two rounds of questions and a casual and dressy wear competition. The girls were nice, shy and sweet and I have a few observations about these wonderful young ladies who will be our future leaders:

All love Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, That’s So Raven, SpongeBob and iCarly

Almost all love Math, Reading and/or Social Studies (which is great!)

All, without exception, love to play with their friends everyday

All wanted to be Models, Artists, Doctors, Lawyers and Veterinarians

All wanted to make new friends

Sadly, several of the girls were “picked on” at school ( Yes, that still happens)

Many girls said they wanted to find a cure for Cancer and help animals, not too shabby for the 7-12 year old age group

As I went through the weekend of judging I was looking for a Social Media angle and I really didn’t find one. The parents were busy handling multiple children and schedules and were not sending live Tweets during the interviews. The Dads were not taking pictures and uploading them to their kid’s Facebook Fan Page. The parents where everyday people just trying to get by and find opportunities for their girls. I was glad that the old fashion media of television provided safe entertainment and good strong girl teen role models.

At the end of the long weekend when the girls in my two categories were named winners they confidently walked to center stage to claim their beautiful crown and flowers and then each broke down and cried. I cried too.

Today I was reminded of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. Many years ago I had the pleasure of working at Franklin Covey. The unique gift of this part time gig was that we were trained on the 7 Habits and our work life was based the book. Everything from the way we treated our customers, our peers and ran the retail store was based on the habits. It was a wonderful time filled with enlightenment and loads of fun. There is nothing wrong with going back to a foundation of principles that simply talk about how to live a good life.

Revisit the 7 Habits and see how they work for you:

Be Proactive –Look at what you can influence instead of reacting to external forces

Begin with the End in Mind –Start every task by knowing the outcome you desire

Put First Things First –Identify and remember the key things in your life and put them first

Think Win/Win–Be a team player. Don’t think win/lose. This is hard in 2009 when people don’t seem to be for each other, but just find a new group of people

Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood–Listen. Walk a mile in their shoes before trying to be a “know it all”

Synergize–Be a team player and pull all voices together for something better. When 2+2 equals more than 4

Sharpen The Saw–Relax, Cool Out, Refresh
