Twitter to LinkedIn – Be Careful!

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Twitter_and_LinkedIn_Peanut_Butter_and_ChocolateTwitter on your LinkedIn?  Ooohhh wait a minute.

The hope is that LinkedIn users will tweet info to Twitter and vice versa. Some people really shouldn’t do this…and you know who you are!  The other people should take a minute and think about it.  Your employer may not always be able to find you on Twitter but now they will. Our 15 minutes of fame is now lasting a lot longer.

Understand, if you don’t do this right, every single tweet will update your status on LinkedIn!

You also have two additional options of installing a Twitter box and a Company Buzz box on your LinkedIn profile.

If you opt to turn on the STATUS feature remember to do this:

Twitter to LinkedIn – Log into LinkedIn

  1. Click on Profile
  2. Click on Edit Profile
  3. In the Twitter section click on Edit and check off “Share only tweets that contain #in”

(Only the hashtag tweets  of #in or #li will go to Linked status)

LinkedIn to Twitter – Log into LinkedIn

  1. Click  on Home
  2. Update your status and if you want it to feed to Twitter, check the Twitter box

This can be a great business tool as long as you remember to keep your eye on the birdie! Check out the details on LinkedIn Learn and let me know if you have any questions.

Weekend Without Social Media-The Teen Pageant

Friday, November 6th, 2009

crownI recently judged our local Miss Teen New York Pageant held by Nationals, Inc. I had the honor of having the Miss Jr. Pre-Teen and the Miss Pre-Teen Categories and the heavy task of interviewing about 100 wonderful girls between the ages of 7-12.  This was not the typical type of contest that you think of with glam makeup and costumes.  These where everyday girls from local neighborhoods who were in their first pageant. They didn’t have tons of hair spray and big production numbers but instead they were judged on interviews, two rounds of questions and a casual and dressy wear competition.  The girls were nice, shy and sweet and I have a few observations about these wonderful young ladies who will be our future leaders:

  1. All love Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, That’s So Raven, SpongeBob and iCarly
  2. Almost all love Math, Reading and/or Social Studies (which is great!)
  3. All, without exception, love to play with their friends everyday
  4. All wanted to be Models, Artists, Doctors, Lawyers and Veterinarians
  5. All wanted to make new friends
  6. Sadly, several of the girls were “picked on” at school ( Yes, that still happens)
  7. Many girls said they wanted to find a cure for Cancer and help animals, not too shabby for the 7-12 year old age group

As I went through the weekend of judging I was looking for a Social Media angle and I really didn’t find one. The parents were busy handling multiple children and schedules and were not sending live Tweets during the interviews. The Dads were not taking pictures and uploading them to their kid’s Facebook Fan Page.  The parents where everyday people just trying to get by and find opportunities for their girls. I was glad that the old fashion media of television provided safe entertainment and good strong girl teen role models.

At the end of the long weekend when the girls in my two categories were named winners they confidently walked to center stage to claim their beautiful crown and flowers and then each broke down and cried. I cried too.
